Readers’ camp for reluctant readers with a focus on phonemic awareness, automaticity and fluency.
The camp instructor, Geneen Massey, has 17 years of teaching experience with a focus on journalism, reading, and English for speakers of other languages. She has taught with Miami Carol City Senior High, Baltimore Community College (PG-Refugee Assistance Program), and Johns Hopkins-SAIS.Geneen earned an M.A.T. from World Learning, School for International Training, in 2011. Geneen also holds a certificate in the Wilson Reading System and has passed the Maryland PRAXIS in the teaching of reading, 6-12. Private tutoring clients have included middle school age through adult learners.
Students will have hands-on experience using multiple modalities to build their individualized reading toolkits. Parents and community members will be invited to view final presentations at the conclusion of camp.
Tuition and fees: $200/week (minimum 5 students)
Classes held daily from 9:00 a.m.- 3:00 p.m.
9:00 – 9:15 a.m. welcoming, song, schedule
9:15 – 10:00 a.m. word study
10:30 – 11:30 p.m. story time
11:30 – 12:30 p.m. outdoor activity and brown bag lunch
12:30 – 1:00 p.m. spelling concepts and practice
1:00 – 2:00 p.m. individualized teacher-student fluency & comprehension practice and independent student selected reading practice/discussion
2:00 – 3:00 p.m. presentation development and practice
*Does not include meals and transportation
*For additional fee: before care 7:30 – 9:00 a.m. ($25) and aftercare until 5:30 p.m. ($40) or both $50 per week
